Salem is an extremely addicting sandbox MMO that we definitely recommend trying out if you’re looking for a simple, straightforward and addicting sandbox style MMO that you can play for hours upon hours. Sandbox MMOs have been around for a while but most of them require players to invest a lot of time before they can play proficiently but, fortunately, this isn’t the case with Salem which is why you can jump right into it.
Salem starts new players off with an extremely in-depth and informative tutorial that’s been designed for the purpose of teaching all the basics of the game to players who aren’t familiar with the basics of sandbox style MMOs. The tutorial of Salem is definitely among the best we’ve seen because it’s incredibly detailed and, alongside this, it doesn’t take up too much time so you’ll be able to breeze through it in mere minutes.
The thing that defines Salem is the fact that it gives players tons upon tons of things to do while they’re in-game. The main task of the game is to start from scratch and build up your homestead into something massive but, as you progress through the game, you’ll unlock more and more activities to keep yourself busy with. One of the best things about Salem is that the game world feels like an actual world. Open World PvP is allowed at all times and players who do things like kill other players without reason and steal resources will actually become labeled as criminals.
One rather peculiar thing about Salem is that it doesn’t utilize the standard health system for its characters. Instead of having a simple red bar displaying your health, you’ll have four different bars for your character which are of Blood, Yellow Bile, Black Bile and Phlegm. These four bars represent the status of your character and while this system is much more complex than the usual health system, it makes the game feel a lot more realistic and immersive so it’s ultimately a good change.
It’s worth mentioning that, like any other game, Salem does come with its share of flaws. One issue we often faced in the game was that characters would sometimes feel rather clunky during combat and sometimes even during simple movement. Fortunately, these issues don’t occur all that often so they won’t have that big of an impact on your overall experience.
Onto the visuals, Salem is definitely one of the most unique looking sandbox MMOs to ever surface. The game’s set in the 17th century and has a very appealing art style that players are sure to enjoy. The only issue we ever noticed with the game’s graphics was that some of the game world’s textures lacked detail but, other than this, the game looked quite spectacular.
As you’d expect from any modern day MMO, Salem comes with its fair share of micro-transactions through which players can get their hands on in-game content of various kinds.
Overall, Salem is an innovative and engaging sandbox MMO that you simply must give a shot to.
