Just when you think sandbox virtual worlds couldn’t get any better, Wurm Online comes in and shows you that you haven’t seen everything in the genre just yet. An older game, it nonetheless offers a very unique experience for the player.
A lengthy tutorial greets you the moment that you step into the game’s world. It would be to your best interests to check that tutorial out in full, because you’ll need all the knowledge that you can get before you even step out and begin colonizing the world you stepped into.
You see, this MMO is more than just a “hack-and-slash,” explorer type of game. It actually attempts to emulate the real world (at least the medieval age) as much as it could. Thus, you’d find that actually building something could take a lot of time. You could say that Wurm Online is actually a real-time RPG set in a fully sandbox world where the sky is virtually the limit.
The worlds you can explore in this game are huge and expansive. There’s basically no end to the horizon, and you’re free to explore as much of this world as you could. You’d also need to do so because you will be hard-pressed to collect all the resources that you need not just to build your settlements, but to craft the tools that you need and the weapons that you must have in your arsenal in order to defend your keep.
Exploring also means that you can come across environmental enemies, most of which have been programmed to be very sneaky. Again, you might feel that you have what you need in order to kill and attack beasts because you have full armor and a cool sword on your side. Think again - if your stats are not good enough, then you’ll only end up as a tasty morsel for the many monsters that lurk in the game’s world like giant spiders, scorpions and others.
While some beasts are out to kill you, some are there for you to breed as livestock. You can actually take care of cows and goats in your settlement.
To those that love player versus player combat, you could join one of the many Player versus Player worlds (servers) that are made available specifically for that aspect of MMO gaming.
Patience is definitely a virtue here in this sandbox MMO - everything takes time, including hunting, building stat points, and constructing edifices in the game’s medieval environment. It could go faster though if you get together with other players, but still, some things take a lot of time when playing this MMO.
Wurm Online is totally free to play, with some perks offered through Premium membership like getting rid of single-server restrictions. You just need to update your Java in order to play the sandbox game.
